Park Hotel Shanghai Entrance

Shanghai Park Hotel

If you read the many descriptions available for the Shanghai Park Hotel, you will come upon the word “
was” again and again. The Park Hotel was…the tallest building in Asia until 1952. The Park Hotel was the tallest building in China until 1952. The Park Hotel was the tallest building in Shanghai until 1983.

While these facts are interesting, there is another way of looking at this great Shanghai Art Deco hotel, however. And that is to say that the Shanghai Park Hotel is. It is still there, it is still in operation, and it is breathtaking.

Reports of the Park Hotel’s demise were greatly exaggerated. And while she suffered in the aftermath of World War Two, she is back, elegant and a landmark among landmarks in downtown Shanghai.
The Shanghai Park Hotel was completed in 1934. It was designed by Hungarian
Laszlo Hudec who was responsible for many of Shanghai’s greatest Art Deco buildings.

The Shanghai Park Hotel faced what was the Shanghai Race Course (today’s People’s Square) and was just two doors down from another Shanghai vintage hotel, the Shanghai Pacific Hotel.

The 24-story Park Hotel has 250 rooms and suites and underwent renovation by Christopher Choa of HLW and also by the
Grigorian Design Group between 1996-1998
The results are truly sumptuous. The four-star Shanghai Park Hotel is a sight to behold, and a true Shanghai vintage hotel.
