Shanghai Metropole Hotel
The Shanghai Metropole Hotel was another venture of Sir Victor Sassoon’s
Cathay Hotels Ltd.'s building spree. It included a lot of what are now Shanghai’s vintage buildings starting with The Cathay Hotel and then going on to the Metropole Hotels, Hamilton House across the street from the Metropole, Cathay Mansions, Grosvenor House and Embankment House.
The 16-story Metropole
( Xincheng Fandian) opened in 1930 and has 141 guest rooms. The Metropole’s somber exterior betrays a bright and well-kept Art Deco lobby and reception area. To the left of the elevator area is a bar and coffee shop and a wonderful spiral staircase. The Shanghai Metropole Hotel is a five-minute walk from the Bund, a short walk from the Nanjing Road shopping area, and just a stroll down Fuzhou Road from Shanghai’s bookstore area.

The Shanghai Metrople Hotel was remodeled in 2003, and plans are reportedly on the drawing board to refurbish it again in 2008-2009. Another Shanghai vintage hotel with a great location.

Shanghai Metropole Hotel
Remodeling has already taken place in the Hamilton House, (the Shanghai Metropole Hotel’s sister building just across the street) creating an harmonious blend of old and new resulting in one of Shanghai’s popular new restaurants. (See reviews on Hamilton House website.)
