Shanghai Astor House Hotel
The Astor House Hotel, (Pujiang Hotel) has been around since 1846, which makes this stately Victorian the oldest hotel in China. Guests at the Astor House Hotel have included everyone from Albert Einstein to ZhouEn Lai.
Lots of Shanghai history and “China firsts” have happened here including having the first electric lights in China in 1882, and the first phone in Shanghai in 1901. Also the first stock exchange after 1949 was inaugurated here at the Astor Hotel.
The Astor Hotel’s spacious Rooms have 4- meter (12-foot ) ceilings with ornate light fixtures and marble baths. Solid wood floors that are 150 years old in some sections
and seasoned wood paneling creates a quiet sense of time gone by.
And as with many Shanghai vintage hotels, the Astor House Hotel has location on its side; it sits on the far end of the Garden Bridge just back from Soochow Creek across from the Russian consulate and is neighbor to the stately Broadway Mansions Hotel. The Astor Hotel is the ideal place to start a morning or evening stroll along the Bund to take in the riverfront scenery that is so much a part of Shanghai history.
